Al-Basar International Foundation, Bangladesh Sector, implemented a series of charitable eye camps in 2018 CE. The camp of Thakurgoan was the first in this series. Whereas the camp of Panchagarh was last in the list. The camp of Cox’s Bazar, Rajshahi Sadar, Godagari and Kishorganj came in between. The total number of camps witnessed by this year stood at six (6).
In these camps 60382 patients with different eye diseases have received free medical services. Among them 5231 patients underwent the free cataract operations along with free IOLs. While 10139 patients received eye glasses. In these camps 118845 unites of medicine have also been distributed.
Let’s have a detailed look at all these camps.
The Camp of Thakurgoan
This camp was held on 16-23 February 1918 in Thakurgoan, a district located in the north-western side of Bangladesh which has a population of 1.3 million.
In this Eye Camp, we could offer the following free services:
Eye Screening: 4000
Cataract operation and lens implantation: 612
Drops and medicines: 11,122
The second free eye camp of the year took place at Ukhia Upazila in cox’s Bazar on 06-13 April 2018 which is some 414.8 kilometers from Dhaka and has an overcrowded population of more than one million due to the hosting of displaced Rohingya refugees.
The total number of people could grip the benefit of this camp was 4000 patients. Among them 529 were fortunate to have the free cataract operation. Whereas the remaining patients received eye drops and medicine total which reached 20,979 units. 1322 eyeglasses had also been distributed in this medical camp.
The third eye camp of this year was implemented in Rajshahi Sadar on 13-20 April 2018, where 4500 patients received free services. Among them 506 men and women underwent the free cataract operation. 1502 glasses and 11,170 units of drops and medicines were also distributed for free.
The weeklong fourth free eye camp of this year was held on 04-11 May, 2018 in Godagari, Rajshahi. In this camp more than 6100 underprivileged men and women received free eye treatment and 746 patients with matured cataract underwent the free operation together with free IOLs implantation. 2023 eyeglasses and 9606 units of medicine have also been distributed here for free.
The fifth free and large eye camp of this year took place in Kishorganj district on 02-9 November 2018. This district located at the distance of 142.2 from Dhaka and has a population of more than 2.9 million.
Statistics show that the total number of people took advantage of this free opportunity was 5600. Amid them 529 could grab the advantage of free cataract operation. In the meantime, the remaining numbers of the patients received free eye drops and medicines which totaled at 20,979 in unit. 2307 eyeglasses had also been distributed in this free medical eye camp.
The sixth and the last free eye camp of this year was the camp of Panchagarh which was held on 06 -13 November 2018. Panchagarh district is some 412.6 kilometers from Dhaka and has a population of about one million. The total number of people benefited from this eye camp was 5400 patients. Among them 595 were fortunate to have the free cataract operation. Whereas the remaining patients received eye drops and medicines that totaled at 28650 units. 1322 Eyeglasses had also been distributed in this free medical eye camp.
Finally, the year 2018 has been an extraordinary year, full of works as well as of great perspectives for the future.
